Sony Pictures registered the movie domains for Naughty Dog’s action-adventure survival horror video game, The Last of Us back in November 2013 and Screen Gems signed on to distribute the movie.
Today, Sony and Screen Gems held a secret panel at San Diego Comic-Con International which was attended by American film director, producer, Sam Raimi along with creative director for the game, writer for the movie, Neil Druckmann.
During the panel, The Last of Us Movie was discussed and said that they met with “Game of Thrones” star Maisie Williams to play Ellie, but nothing has yet been signed.
Raimi said: “It’s gonna be a great character journey, a great love story, and great horror fiction,” and teased Evil Dead TV show, “I always loved working on that series with Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert, and my brother and I are writing the Evil Dead TV show right now … with Bruce Campbell.”
When asked if Bruce Campbell will be in The Last Of Us film adaptation, Druckmann said, “Bruce Campbell himself would make a good Joel” and Raimi said they will “find some place for him.”
Druckmann said that his priority in working on the script was to “laser-focus” on the central relationship between Ellie and Joel, who are two young survivors in a post-apocalyptic outbreak of a mutant Cordyceps fungus in United States.
“There’s never been a really great movie made from a video game. There have been ones that we’ve enjoyed but we thought, ‘What if we could make the first great one?’ We’re gonna work our asses off [to make that happen],” concluded Druckmann.
A director for The Last of Us Movie is yet to be announced.
